Book Quotes: Extreme Mind Makeover by Steve Etner

Introduction

As the Holy Spirit taught me to change my thinking patterns to be in alignment with the truths of Scripture, I began to see a change in my behavior patterns as well. And so did my family and friends.

Chapter 1: Life’s Purpose

God has given you everything you need to live a godly life, and it comes only as you grow in your knowledge – a deep understanding – of Him. As this happens, you will begin to think about Him differently. Since your thinking has changed, your behavior will be different because of what you now know to be true about do. You will begin living out godliness.

Chapter 2: The Right Foundation

You have to put what God says into practice in your life. You have to live it out, making it real in your daily life. This is not something you do on occasion, not even most of the time – it must become a normal part of your everyday living.

Chapter 3: Glorifying God

This book is a result of my personal journey through the Scriptures, learning that the sin we battle with is not stronger than God. The temptation that seemingly overwhelms you is actually powerless over you – you can live a consistent godly life!

Chapter Four: Understanding Sin

All sin is wrongdoing according to God because sin is breaking God’s law, going against God’s perfect standards and refusing to obey God’s commands. Simply put, when you violate the commands of Scripture, you are guilty of sin (Jas. 2:10).

Sin comes from within our own being. We are born sinners.

Chapter Five: Why Do We Sin? A Deeper Look

Before you accepted Christ as your Savior, both your body and spirit were dead. Now that you are saved, your spirit is alive in Christ, while your body is still dead in sin. No matter where you may be in your spiritual walk, your flesh is still dead in sin.

Chapter Six: A Look at Temptation

You will always be tempted; it’s part of the Christian life. But you never have to give in to the temptation. You never have to sin. Others have experienced the same temptation and have been victorious over it. So can you!

Chapter Seven: Living by the Spirit

As you read God’s Word, study it, memorize it, and meditate on it, the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance what God says you should do every time you face a decision. Just as God promised the Children of Israel in Isaiah 30:21, so His promise stands for us today: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.'” The Holy Spirit is that voice, guiding you through the promises and principles of God’s Word.

Chapter Eight: Transformers: Christians Undisguised

God commands us to “not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2). To “conform” conveys the idea of putting on a mask so as to appear to those around you as something you’re not. When a Christian conforms to the pattern of this world, they adjust their behavior to imitate the traits or features that are characteristic of the unsaved around them.

Chapter Nine: Do Diligence

To keep from being deceived, you must actively put into action in your life the things you hear from and see in God’s Word. You must choose to live it out daily. When you say you believe the Word of God to be true, but your actions — or lack of action — prove otherwise, you are that foolish man building his house on the sand — deceived into believing his home will stand even in the fiercest storm.

Chapter Ten: Prosperity and Success: Kingdom and Righteousness

It is only when you meditate on God’s Word, applying its truth to your daily life, that your choices to glorify God will affect a lifestyle change. You are making your “way,” — your course of life — prosperous. It is then that the contentment, peace, and godliness God has promised to you will be experienced in your life.

Chapter Eleven: Delighting in God’s Word

God says you are blessed when you delight in His Word. You should long for the time each day when you can sit down with your Bible and listen to your Father speak to you. You should go throughout each day anxiously looking forward to the moments when you can sit down with your Bible and cling to His every word.

Chapter Twelve: Understanding the Mind

The way you discover God’s will for what you should or should not see is to be a student of God’s Word. As you become intimately familiar with the Author of Scripture, it will become easier for you to understand the voice of the Holy Spirit as He directs you to discern between things that are going to help you grow spiritually and those that can draw you away from God, thus weakening your faith.

Chapter Thirteen: The Master Deceiver

What you think becomes what you do, and Satan knows that if he can successfully get you to listen to and believe his lies, he will be able to lead you away from a “sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (2 Cor. 11:3).

Chapter Fourteen: Think on These Things

I challenge you to memorize Philippians 4:8 and 2 Corinthians 10:5, and then discipline yourself to run every single thought you think past the following six questions. As you do, evaluate each thought and take captive those that do not bring glory to God, casting them out.

  1. Is it True?
  2. Is it Noble?
  3. Is it Right?
  4. Is it Pure?
  5. Is it Lovely?
  6. Is it Admirable?

Chapter Fifteen: The Review

Let’s review where we’ve been. Your mind plays a crucial role in living a life that glorifies God. Remember, if you are going to glorify God in your everyday living, you must first glorify Him in your every-moment thinking. We are told that when we live by the Spirit we will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
