Book Quotes: Manhood Journey, Start Out Right, by Roy Smith
Chapter 1: Developing Your Manhood Team
A male’s frequent tendency to walk life’s path alone hurts him at deep levels; because of the solitary nature of his walk, he fails to discover his significance and his specific role within the community. Failing to find their value, males become numb while attempting to live life as simply as possible, often in robotic ways. Every day feels the same; they are often bored. They have lost their ability to feel their passion and apply it. Manhood eludes them as they constantly choose to take the easy way through life.
Chapter 2: Committing to the Manhood Journey
An important interaction occurs when you identify your goals while actively participating in a relationship community at the same time. The caring people who are a part of your relationship community will recognize your areas of giftedness; through their interventions in your life, you will learn to understand your true strengths.
Chapter 3: Building Manly Character
Principle of manhood #2 (Choices) emphasizes the man’s authorship of his own life. A man is responsible for how his relationships with others turn out. Principle of Manhood #2 states, “A man is responsible for all of his choices.”
Chapter 4: A Man Seeks Knowledge
Principle of manhood #6 (Learning) states, “A man I dedicated to continuous learning.” It is natural for a man to proactively look for better ways of doing things.
Chapter 5: Responsible Living
Principle of Manhood #8 (Control) states, “A man shapes the forest more than the forest shapes him.” Forest is a manhood term that means life, culture, world and environment.”
Chapter 6: The Foundation of Manhood
Principle of Manhood #13 (Perseverance) states, “A man does not always get it right the first time, but he keeps on trying until he does.”
Chapter 7: Leaving Your Immaturity Behind
Many males circumvent the refinement process. They try to avoid the difficulties that are a natural part of the growth process that is required for manhood, in exchange for what appears to be an easier approach to life. This approach provides males with a synthetic definition of life. They choose a simpler, quicker, less demanding path and have fewer expectations for authenticity.
Chapter 8: Outgrowing Your Childish Tendencies
By confronting our immature male tendencies, we learn to become men. To do this, we must curb your childish impulses, limit our self-focused tendencies and set higher standards for ourselves. Our childish tendencies to establish shallow relationships and use people purely for their function in our lives are not enough to sustain us long-term. We need to heal the wounds we have experienced and inflicted within our relationships and build relationships which have substance and meaning.
Chapter 9: The Worlds You Live In
The term forest paths can be used to describe the types of experiences that are part of each man’s environment. A knight chooses the right path–the one which will get him where he wants to go–while also using his manhood to avoid the numerous detours and obstacles along the way. Sometimes, the path has thorns that will cut and scratch him, as he blazes a trail through life. He perseveres, because he knows God has something better in mind for him. As he makes choices, he keeps his focus on what God wants.
Chapter 10: Finding Your Way to Manhood
We are about to enter several gray areas in life. This can create anxiety, anger, distrust and intellectual challenges? our manhood discussion. We gain confidence for the gray parts of reality because thee are absolutes, especially in the area of our faith, that we can rely upon. There are several absolutes we believe in: one is the existence of one God who speaks to us through His perfect Word, the Bible; another is that a person ho is completely honest with himself quickly concludes that the presence of sin, around us and within us, is real. Our faith in these absolutes serves as a form of safety harness, as we enter the gray areas of life.
