There really shouldn’t be a parachurch ministry called New Commandment Men’s Ministries. In fact, it felt very strange incorporating the “New Commandment” as a 501 (c)3 fifteen years ago. And I never have managed to get up the nerve to trade mark our logo. How can I possibly tell people, “Stop using my trade mark of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet!”
Nope, New Commandment Men’s Ministries shouldn’t be here. In fact, everything about New Commandment Men’s Ministries should already be obvious to churches. Here’s a list of some of those obvious elements:
- The New Commandment and the New Covenant are central elements of our faith.
- The love of Christ is unique to Christians and has immediate and dramatic implications for everyone around us.
- We need to focus greater attention on men’s ministry and men’s discipleship.
- The church must meet the pressing needs of its widowed, single parents and others with long term needs.
- Being able to say with the early church, “There is no needy person among us” should be a central goal of any church.
- Good works are extremely important for all believers to perform.
The nice thing about what we do at New Commandment is that every church already knows in theory that these things are important. They just get distracted with extraneous things, like what color the carpet should be in the new sanctuary. Once we bring them to the attention of a church’s leadership, it normally awakens from its slumber and starts making changes.
Truth be told, New Commandment Men’s Ministries should never have had to exist at all. But sometimes the church needs someone to hold a mirror so it can look into it and see where it stands on certain matters. Then it can make the changes it needs to make. And when it does, I’ll be out of a job.
