In my first two posts on the topic of how God speaks, I covered how God speaks in creation, in our personhood, in our conscience and in the Bible. Today I want to look at the most important way God speaks.
God Speaks in His Son, Jesus Christ
The Bible tells us that the Incarnation of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, is the greatest revelation God has made about himself to the human race. This is how the author of the Book of Hebrews puts it in 1:1-3:
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of Gods glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
The writer here is saying that everything we need to know about God is contained in Jesus Christ. Because Jesus is “the exact representation of his being,” God “has spoken to us” accurately and precisely about himself.
To emphasize this idea that God is speaking to us through Jesus Christ, the Apostle John calls Jesus “the Word” in John 1:14:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
As John writes in John 1:1, this “Word” was and is in fact God himself.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And yet, at the same time that the Word is God himself, the Word is also a concrete human being who can be seen, touched and heard:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched–this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. (1 John 1:1)
Thus, to the question, if God wants to communicate with us, then why doesn’t he just appear and prove to us that he exists, the answer is, “Well, actually, he already has. He’s been here, done that.” And what happened as a result? The world rejected him and crucified him.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. (John 1:10-12)
So how about you? Have you received Jesus Christ as your personal savior?
