The Unseen Companion book cover

Give “The Unseen Companion: God with the Single Mother” by Michelle Lynn Senters, to every single mom you know and encourage them to read it two or three times. For in it they will learn a critical lesson: that the most important things in life are unseen, and the most important of all is the unseen companion — God. Why? Because, as Michelle Senters shows us so poignantly on every page, God is the source of the spiritual and emotional healing that deeply wounded single moms need.

Michell Senters was a Single Mom Herself

A veteran single mom herself, Michelle Senters is the epitome of 2 Corinthians 1:4, “[God] comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

As a single mother of three girls who experienced abandonment, divorce, exhaustion, poverty, loneliness, ostracism, self-doubt, self-pity, and even the terror of being stalked for years, Michelle poignantly illustrates how the power of the Word of God and the presence of God himself can bring healing, peace, rest, perspective, and inner strength to every struggling single mother.

The Unseen Companion is Biblically Precise and Relevant to Life

Like a healing salve, Michelle applies with precision and insight relevant biblical passages to the soul-sapping struggle many single moms bear in private. For example, her chapter on the importance of rest begins with a cleareyed description of what a harried single mother experiences juggling work and home life, then thoroughly covers the topic of rest in the Bible, and ends with an application of how a single mother can make room in her busy life to take a daily nap!

In her chapter on protection, Michelle relates her harrowing experiences of being stalked by an unknown stalker or stalkers, on two separate occasions. She dissects in great detail her own trauma induced feelings of fight or flight, and how the presence and protection of God, and her knowledge of his Word, helped her through those experiences.

The Unseen Companion Blends Biblical Truth with Psychological Insight

Her chapter on healing from emotionally traumatic experiences beautifully blends biblical truth with psychological insight, walking the reader through the origin of the emotional wound, the original response to the wound, triggers that reopen the wound, and then breaking the “tie that binds” with truth, prayer and forgiveness.

With more than twenty percent of households in America headed by single mothers, churches need to do more to reach this often unnoticed demographic. Having several copies of The Unseen Companion on hand to give out to visiting single mothers will be an excellent start.

A single mom and her fatherless child with their team of men

Since 2003 New Commandment Men’s Ministries has helped hundreds of churches throughout North America and around the world recruit teams of men who permanently adopt widows, single moms and fatherless children in their congregations for the purpose of donating two hours of service to them one Saturday morning each month. We accomplish this with a free training site called New Commandment Men’s Ministry Learn how to mobilize your men’s ministry to meet every pressing need in your church at newcommandment.org.
