Sitting in My Spaceship Out On the Front Lawn

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.”1

I crashed and burned every Monday morning when I was a pastor. All the adrenaline fueling my ministry on Sundays would somehow evaporate overnight leaving me limp and lifeless, like a hapless hot air balloon draped over a telephone line. On those bleak mornings, Patti would look at my blank stare and remark, “You’re sitting in your spaceship out on the front lawn.”

I don’t get spaced out like that very often anymore now that I’m running a nonprofit. Mondays energize me. After a weekend of rest and relaxing worship, I wake up on Monday morning all jazzed about the week ahead and what can be accomplished.

Not today. The weekend was exhausting, ending with my non-profit board meeting last night. Mind you, I have a wonderful board and the meeting went great. But it was still a meeting.

So this morning my brain feels like it’s filled with lead and my muscles feel like they’re in the body of a sixty something year old man.

Oh, wait a minute. I am a sixty something year old man.

A third cup of coffee and some excellent coffeecake are making it possible for me to peck out this post. But now, like Jesus and his disciples, it’s time for me to go by myself to my quiet place out on my front lawn and get some rest.
