The Jesus Discipleship Plan, There is No Plan B!

Scripture Passage: 2 Timothy 2:2: "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others" (NIV).

This critical Scripture passage highlights the core Christian practice of coaching, mentoring and training others. It outlines a four-generation model of passing down the faith: Paul (1st) taught Timothy (2nd), who is told to train reliable people (3rd), who will then teach others (4th). One of the key elements to look for in other Christians is trustworthiness!

When I was involved in a university Christian campus ministry, we were told to search out F.A.T. students. What are F.A.T. Christians? This acronym stood for faithful, available, teachable. If you think about it, this is a powerful reminder. Christian men’s ministry leaders like you and me must look for faithful, dependable individuals who not only learn the message and lifestyle of Jesus Christ but also live it and show the ability to teach it properly.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of the latest Church growth gimmick. But for faithful followers of Jesus, there is no Plan B! Honestly, are you currently being discipled by someone? Tell the truth, are you currently discipling someone? If not, we need to put on our uniform … much less get in the game!

A young man I know recently attended a ReEngage meeting at a large church in the Dallas, Texas area. He was looking to join a young men’s group. He was informed that he would need to attend twelve meetings before he was placed into a group. At first, I thought … how rude. Then, upon reflection, I realized this church was practicing the very tough teachings of Jesus. Before being placed into a men’s group he needed to prove that he was serious and that he was faithful.

Wasn’t it our Savior who commanded, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26 (English Standard Version)

One of my seminary professors was fond of asking us, “Show me your men! If you believe you are a leader, you need to turn around every once in a while, and see if anyone is really following. If not, you may not be a leader, you may just be out for a long walk!”

This rebuke seemed harsh at the time. But think how the rich young ruler felt when Jesus told him, “Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.”

We must count the cost of discipleship. Who is discipling you and who are you discipling?
